Question tags หรือ Tag-questions หลักการใช้และตัวอย่าง
ลักษณะคำถามแบบหนึ่งที่เจ้าของภาษานิยามคือ Question tags ซึ่งพบบ่อยมากในการสนทนา โดยคำถามนั้น จะเป็นคำถามสั้นๆ ที่ขึ้นต้นด้วยกริยาช่วยพิเศษวางอยู่ท้ายประโยคบอกเล่าหรือปฏิเสธแล้วแต่กรณี ลักษณะที่ควรจำคือ
| A. ถ้าหาก statement ที่ยกมาเป็นบอกเล่า ใน Question tag จะเป็นปฏิเสธ B. ถ้าหาก statement ที่ยกมาเป็นปฏิเสธ ใน Question tag จะเป็นบอกเล่า ตัวอย่าง It is hot today, isn’t it?You aren’t sick, are you?He rarely comes here, does he? |
อย่างไรก็ตามใน Question tags มีกฎการใช้ปลีกย่อยที่ควรทราบ เช่น
1. กรณีที่ประธานของประโยคในเป็น everybody, everyone, everything, somebody, someone, something, nobody, no one, nothing, anybody, anyone, anything จะใช้รูป Question tags เป็น “helping verb + they?”
ตัวอย่าง
- Everybody is anxious to go there, aren’t they?
- Nobody is living there, are they?
2. กรณีที่ statement ที่ยกมามีคำหรือข้อความปฏิเสธ อาทิ seldom, rarely, scarcely, hardly, barely, little, few, only ใน Question tags จะเป็นรูป positive (บอกเล่า)
ตัวอย่าง
- She scarcely likes him, does she?
- I seldom go asleep, did I?
- Little sugar added tastes well, does it?
3. กรณีที่ statement ที่ยกมามีคำว่า “never” รวมยู่ด้วย ใน Question tags จะใช้รูปบอกเล่า
ตัวอย่าง
- She has never told me like that, has she?
- They have never been there, have they?
4. กรณีที่ statement เริ่มต้นด้วยคำว่า Let’s (let us) ใน Question tags จะใช้ shall we? แต่ถ้าเริ่มต้นด้วย Let me/him/her จะใช้ will you?
ตัวอย่าง
- Let’s go to the cinema, shall we?
- Let him come in, will you?
5. กรณีที่ statement ที่ยกมาเป็นแบบ command ใน Question tags จะใช้ will you?
ตัวอย่าง
- Open the window, will you?
- Stop slamming the door, will you?
6. กรณีที่ statement มีสอง clauses คือทั้ง main clause และ subordinate clause ใน Question tags จะใช้รูปตามกริยาใน main clause
ตัวอย่าง
- They said they wouldn’t reveal my secret, would they?
(หมายเหตุ: statement ที่ยกมามี 2 clauses คือมี main clause และ subordinate clause ในกรณีนี้ main clause คือ they wouldn’t reveal my secret ใน Question tag จึงเป็น would they?)
7. กรณีที่ statement ใช้กริยาเป็นรูปย่อ เช่น ‘d better (had better), ‘d rather (would rather), ‘d go (would go) ใน tag จะต้องใช้ให้ถูกต้อง
ตัวอย่าง
- We’d better call the police, haven’t we?
- I’d go there, wouldn’t I?
