Response Essay
Purpose: To make a personal response to a piece of work of any kind.
Introduction: Introduces the piece of work to be discussed and sets out your personal opinion.
Body: Presents evidence which supports your personal opinion of the work. May make connections to your own personal life.
Conclusion: Re-addresses the original opinion in light of the evidence and clarifies how the evidence confirms that view.
Language: Emotive, accurate and descriptive when you need to persuade the reader that your opinion is valid.
Other considerations: If the essay guidelines give a specific aspect which demands a response, be sure to address that point.

Queen Mary 2: The Greatest Ocean Liner Ever Built
One of the most successful films of 1997 was Titanic, which told the story of the ill-fated vessel which sank en route to New York when it struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic. Surprisingly, given the tragedy which befell the Titanic, the film stimulated considerable interest in transatlantic crossings by ocean liner – voyages which were available only with Cunard Line on the ageing Queen Elizabeth 2. Cunard sensed an opportunity to revive the glamorous traditions of transatlantic sailings, and commissioned the naval architect, Stephen Payne, to design a brand new ship, which was expected to be the most magnificent ocean liner ever constructed. The result was the Queen Mary 2, on which this author recently had the opportunity to sail, in order to evaluate the extent to which Payne succeeded in his mission.
The first thing that strikes one upon arriving at the dockside and setting eyes upon QM2 is her sheer size. To maximize passenger revenue, Payne was ordered to incorporate as many balcony cabins as possible, but on the treacherous North Atlantic those cabins had to be located high above the waterline (Payne, 2006). Accordingly the ship dwarfs the terminal buildings and affords panoramic views over her home port of Southampton from the uppermost decks. However, while many modern passenger ships tend towards a rather “boxy” appearance, QM2 is of a much more slender and traditional design, with a reinforced bow ideally suited to slicing through the worst of the North Atlantic’s notorious weather. Indeed, on the second day of my own crossing I was able to see for myself how well she handled the waves as the sea conditions became rough with a heavy swell, yet QM2 was barely inconvenienced as she maintained a speed in excess of 25 knots through the worst of the weather.
Internally, Payne’s design seeks to recapture the glory of earlier liners with its grand public spaces, such as the main lobby, the Queens Room and the Britannia Restaurant spread over two decks. Running around deck seven is the spacious outdoor promenade, which allows passengers to make a complete circuit of the ship, while the cascading decks at the stern of the vessel make a splendid vantage point for soaking up the sun and admiring the passing ocean. Although the ship accommodates over 2,600 travellers (www.cunard.com, 2012), the ambience on board is one of peace, quiet and space, while the refined levels of service in QM2’s opulent public spaces contribute further towards the impression of luxury. During my own crossing, it was never necessary to wait for service, to queue for any of the ship’s facilities, nor difficult to find available seating. According to Cunard, the ship was full, but one would never have guessed that to be the case.
Without having personally experienced a transatlantic passage upon one of the great liners of yesteryear, one cannot be entirely certain that Payne’s creation has surpassed all of those which came before. However, the technological superiority of the ship cannot be doubted, and her on-board facilities, service and overall ambience certainly exceeded my own high expectations. At the time writing, QM2 has completed 215 transatlantic crossings along with several world cruises, and she is greeted by admiring crowds in every port she visits. Cunard confidently state that she is the greatest ocean liner ever built (www.cunard.com, 2012), and I can personally find no reason to disagree.
