How to paraphrase
A paraphrase differs from a translation in not being a transfer from one language to another. Also, paraphrasing is restating information from a text into your own words. Unlike a summary, a paraphrase does not condense information by just providing an overview. Instead a paraphrase should always be the same length as the original text, and should be completely in your own words and reflect the text’s intended meaning. The purposes of paraphrase are to clarify information, explain complex information and adjust the text to your audience’s reading level. An important thing to remember about paraphrasing is that while you are reporting your own version of the information from the source, it is important to cite the source where the information was taken from. If you don’t, this will be considered as plagiarism. Following are some of the details about how to paraphrase properly, without getting the image of plagiarism.
First of all you have to read the paragraph very carefully so that you can analyze after that how to arrange the words. After that you will remove the unnecessary words from the paragraph because the unnecessary words just create the verbosity in the write up, therefore, you can reduce the verbosity by replacing the two compound words with the one strong word. Like instead of writing two words “thoughts and ideas” you can write one of them. You should also analyze that whether the writing skills match with your skills or not because the more you link it with your writing the stronger paraphrasing will be done. To avoid the poor disguise which say that you are not only changing the outlook of the source you must consider the each and the minor detail as well. The write up should exhibit your writing skills instead of the other author. Sometimes even if you change the wording but get the idea from the other source then in the case of the intellectual and creative idea, you can be accused of plagiarism. The structure of the sentence that is very similar to the other author’s material will be plagiarism. Therefore, you should change the whole paragraph and even the structure of the write up as well. The idea in the paraphrasing is same as that of the original material but the changes are made in the grammar and also in the synonyms. One of the best ways of doing the paraphrasing is to just write the quotes in a proper manner and then giving the references. Lastly, recheck and revise everything. You cannot be too careful. Check that your paraphrase accurately reflects the meaning of the original text, is completely in your own words, makes sense and is cited.

Most of the people are accused of plagiarism just because of the paraphrasing. In fact paraphrasing is considered to be the main type of plagiarism. But one thing that is very important about the paraphrasing is that along with it the proper citation is very necessary. จากข้อมูลของ Cambridge Advanced Learners’ Dictionary สรุปได้ว่า Plagiarism หมายถึงการใช้ความคิดของคนอื่นและนำมาใช้เป็นของตนเอง ถึงแม้ว่าบางครั้งอาจจะไม่ได้ตั้งใจ แต่การนำข้อมูลจากงานเขียนของคนอื่นมาใช้โดยไม่ระบุแหล่้งอ้างอิง ก็ถือว่า Plagiarism เหมือนกัน ซึ่งในงานวิชาการแล้ว ถือว่า Plagiarism เป็นอาชญากรรมที่ร้ายแรงเลยทีเดียว
แล้ว Paraphase กับ Summary แตกต่างกันอย่างไร?
Paraphase เป็นการเขียนให้มีความยาวตามต้นฉบับ แต่ Summary เป็นการเขียนให้สั้นกว่าต้นฉบับ
มีวิธีการเขียน Paraphase อย่างไร?
คำถามนี้ หากจะตอบโดยละเอียดก็คงจะกว้างมาก จึงขอสรุปแบบง่ายๆ สั้นๆ ดังนี้
1. เขียน Main Point ของแต่ละประโยคใหม่ โดยใช้คำ Synonyms (คำที่มีความหมายเหมือนกัน)
2. เปลี่ยนโครงสร้างประโยค
3. ตัดประโยคที่ยาวๆ ให้เป็นสองประโยค
4. รวมสองประโยคที่สั้นๆ เข้าด้วยกัน
5. เปลี่ยน Voice (Active/Passive)
6. เปลี่ยนลำดับการนำเสนอแนวคิด (ให้ยาวเท่าที่ความหมายยังไม่เปลี่ยน)
7. ทำให้งานที่เขียนใหม่มีความยาวพอประมาณกับต้นฉบับ
8. อย่าเปลี่ยนความหมายของต้นฉบับ
